Our Cast Iron Restoration Process

Curious about our cast iron restoration process? Here are some details:

Cleaning and stripping of old seasoning, rust, and build-up are done using a combination of electrolysis, a lye bath, and a vinegar bath. These methods are safe and will not damage cast iron.

Every item is then thoroughly washed with mild dish soap and water prior to seasoning.

Your cast iron cookware will undergo 2-4 rounds of seasoning in the oven with either organic grapeseed oil or BuzzyWaxx products. Some items may require more seasoning than others. Not all finished products will look identical due to the age and condition of each item.

We NEVER use power tools, self-cleaning ovens, or fire to clean pans. These methods are harmful and can permanently damage cast iron cookware.

Disclaimer

*Cleaning rust and thick crud from cast iron cookware can sometimes reveal issues like scratches, cracks, staining, pitting, and warping.

*If an issue is discovered during the cleaning process, we will contact you to discuss the severity of the defect and whether or not you wish to continue with the restoration process.

*If the restoration is stopped, you will not be charged. If you choose to continue restoration, all charges will be payable upon completion.

*You will be notified once the restoration of your item is complete. Payment is expected within 30 days of notification of completion. Completed items will not be shipped until payment is received in full.

*Items not paid for or picked up locally after 30 days from notice of completion will be subject to a late fee of $10 per week. Any item left over 60 days will be considered abandoned and may be sold to recoup restoration and storage costs.

“Fantastic Restoration”

We highly recommend Campfires and Cast Iron for restoring any iron cookware. We had 3 skillets that were very used (and showed it). Stacy did a fantastic job bringing them back to life. She even helped explain some history of our pans and provided before and after photos. Stacy is very passionate about her job and is a pleasure to work with!

“Couldn’t Believe It Was The Same Pan!”

I have a special cast iron skillet that was my (late) Mother’s from the 1950s. It was covered in crud and not in a usable state. I dropped it off with Stacy for restoration. When I got it back, boy, was I surprised! I couldn’t believe it was the same pan! I’m grateful for the wonderful service provided by Campfires and Cast Iron. I remember my sweet Mother every time I use her favorite skillet.

Knowledgeable and Professional

Stacy did a great job restoring an antique bean pot and long griddle for me to display in my home. Both pieces were from the late 1800s and required a certain amount of care, as the iron was delicate due to age. She knew exactly how to handle the situation and was even able to provide me with some interesting historical information about one of the pieces.

“Cast Iron Restoration Made Easy”

I had two Griswold skillets that belonged to my grandmother that I tried to restore myself but it was too much of a challenge. I contacted Campfires and Cast Iron, and Stacy got back to me promptly with a very reasonable quote. She made the whole process very easy and provided me with text and photo updates as my pans underwent restoration. Return shipping was also fast and easy. I am very pleased with the way my pans turned out. Plan to use this service again in the future with my other pans.

“Five Stars!”

We found three old cast iron skillets in my Dad’s barn last year. Our plan was to clean them up and teach our teenage kids the art of cooking with cast iron. We tried a cast iron cleaning tutorial on the internet, but the skillets ended up looking worse than when we started (probably our own errors!) My husband came across the Campfires and Cast Iron website and we contacted Stacy. She responded quickly, gave us a reasonable quote, and helped us figure out the best shipping solution for our situation. To say we were impressed with the final result is an understatement – these skillets look LIKE NEW! Our family has thoroughly enjoyed cooking in our restored skillets. Our oldest son has even asked if he can take “his” cast iron pan to college next year. Thank you for this awesome restoration service – we give it Five Stars!
