I love trail mix! It’s a quick and healthy snack that travels well and can satisfy sweet, salty, crunchy, or chewy cravings. In fact, I usually keep a large Mason jar full of my personalized Paleo trail mix on my desk at work to satisfy the mid-afternoon munchies and keep me from raiding the office candy jar ( 🙂 ). Of course, trail mix is always in my pack when I go hiking, too!

I also love that trail mix is completely customizable. Do you want raisins or chocolate chips in your mix? How about cashews, almonds, or macadamia nuts? Salted or unsalted? Would you care for dried fruit? The combinations are endless!

Bonus – It’s also usually cheaper to buy ingredients in bulk and make your own Paleo trail mix instead of buying pre-packaged trail mixes. This way, you know exactly what’s going into your mix, too. There have been many times when I’ve picked up a bag of trail mix at the grocery store that claimed to be “healthy and all-natural,” only to find it was packed with unnecessary refined sugars and unhealthy oils.

Making trail mix is a fun project for kids, too. Use kid-friendly snack containers and let them layer their favorite ingredients however they like. No more “I’m hungry!” complaints along the hiking trails!

Some examples of Paleo-friendly trail mix ingredients include nuts like almonds, macadamias, walnuts, brazil nuts, cashews, and pecans (no peanuts, they are considered legumes and aren’t Paleo), pumpkin and sunflower seeds, dried fruits without cane sugar (fruits sweetened with apple juice and coconut sugar are fine), dried coconut chips, and chocolate chunks.

Here’s an example of some Paleo trail mix jars I recently made:

Whatever ingredients you choose, you’ll know that you’re fueling your body with healthy, nutrient-dense nuts, seeds, and fruits that will help keep you going on all of your adventures!
